What We Look For In a TACHS Tutor • Advanced Test Mastery: Deep knowledge of TACHS test sections including Reading, Language, Mathematics, and Ability covering vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, usage, math concepts, estimation, and abstract reasoning. Ability to explain scoring methodology, school preference rankings, and the role of TACHS scores in Catholic high school admissions while preparing New York City eighth graders for competitive placement. • Strategic Test-Taking & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching reading passage annotation, grammar rule application, and mental math estimation strategies for TACHS. Guides students through vocabulary-in-context questions, paragraph organization tasks, fraction and decimal computations, and abstract pattern recognition in the Ability section. Emphasizes time management across all sections and building confidence through systematic practice and familiarity with question formats. • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with TACHS test structure and common challenges such as the estimation-based math format, abstract reasoning in the Ability section, and the breadth of grammar topics tested. Adapts instruction using TACHS practice booklets, timed section drills, and vocabulary building exercises to support eighth grade students seeking admission to Catholic high schools in the New York City metropolitan area. • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles. • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style. • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
