Niles Community Schools English Learner (EL) Teacher Job Description January 26, 2026 Full-time position for the 2025-2026 school year Reports to:English Learner Coordinator and Assistant Superintendent (or designee) Position Details: • Reports to: English Learner Coordinator and Assistant Superintendent • Compensation: CBA Teacher Salary Schedule (full-time, prorated for 2025-2026 if hired mid-year) Job Goal: Niles Community Schools is seeking a highly qualified teacher to provide English Learner instruction to all qualifying English Learners through direct/indirect services, depending on the student’s needs. The English Learner teacher collaborates with general education teachers to ensure the English Learners receive content instruction that is accessible to their language level, while learning English. The English Learner teacher supports instruction of the mainstream class by discussing/modeling content delivery using ESL/sheltered or content-specific instruction that is essential for English Learners. Required Qualifications: • Valid Michigan Secondary/Elementary Teaching Certificate with endorsements in ESL (NS) or Bilingual Education (YT) • Previous experience working with multilingual learners and their families • Five years successful experience as a classroom teacher Preferred Qualifications • SIOP Trained • Proficiency in a second language Performance Responsibilities: • Work collaboratively with a culturally diverse community and student population. • Support English Learners (EL) and Former English Learners (FEL) on their targeted language and academic objectives in 1:1, small group, and/or push-in settings, based on the building caseload and individual needs of students. • Assess and monitor student growth toward proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the English language. • Administer WIDA assessments - including the WIDA Screener and WIDA Access - to all active EL students. • Collaborate with the building MTSS team to support coherent, tiered instruction for multilingual learners. • Meet weekly with non-certified EL Support staff to provide guidance on instructional plans for the individual and groups they support. • Collaborate in a Professional Learning Community with other EL teachers in the building and district to align best practices. • Educate mainstream classroom teachers regarding appropriate accommodations for individual English Learners. • Work collaboratively with EL Coordinator. • Participate in Professional Development to increase capacity to use evidence-based academic and social-emotional teaching strategies in the service of the unique learning needs of ELs and FELs. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: • Regular, dependable attendance is a critical performance factor to ensure consistent, high-quality services to children and families. • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, parents, the community and administrative peers. • Demonstrated planning, organizational, motivational, and evaluation skills, including the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and have excellent attention to detail. • Proven ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and develop an appropriate course of action. • Must have strong oral and verbal communication skills. • Demonstrated ability to contribute constructively to closing racial, ethnic, gender, and socio-economic achievement gaps. • Experience ensuring equity among programs and learning opportunities for staff, students, and parents. • Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and model service-oriented leadership. • Lifelong learner with a collaborative spirit. • Experience working with students in a diverse, multicultural academic setting. • Bilingual preferred but not required. Other Qualifications: Professional dress is required for this position. Blue jeans, sweat pants, and camo are generally not acceptable dress. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and talk or hear, in addition to being occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to maintain composure and function effectively in a noisy, fast-moving environment and assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of students in that environment. The employee engages in physical management with students in order to maintain a safe environment for students and others.
