Job Description: The HIM Coding Director is accountable for the successful strategic, operational, financial, and programmatic performance of the Acute / Inpatient Hospital Coding team across the integrated health system, including vendor-supported services. This Director is also responsible for regulatory compliance, training, auditing and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of health information management practices. Awards are paid out based on attainment of selected Intermountain Health Board-approved goals. This position is a remote / work from home opportunity with business travel as needed (to Broomfield, CO or Salt Lake City). Intermountain Health maintains employment registration in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, and Montana. Candidates in other locations may be considered. Currently, we are not hiring remote workers in the following states: CA, CT, HI, IL, NY, RI, VT, and WA. As the HIM Director of Inpatient / Hospital Coding, you will: Oversee Acute Inpatient Hospital Coding, providing strategic direction and operational guidance. Ensure the team is well-trained, motivated, and aligned with the organization's goals. Ensure all HIM practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including HIPAA and other privacy laws. Stay informed about changes in regulations and implement necessary adjustments. Maintain the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of health information data, along with implementing quality control measures and ensuring timely and accurate documentation. Optimize the use of HIM systems and software. Evaluate and implement new technologies that improve data management and patient care. Identify opportunities for process enhancements within HIM operations. Develop and implement strategies that improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service delivery. Work closely with clinical, administrative, and IT teams to ensure seamless integration of HIM processes with other departments. Drive initiatives to standardize and optimize health information systems, leveraging data-driven decision-making, process improvement, and workforce development. Develop and manage the assigned HIM department budget, ensuring resource allocation supports strategic objectives Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for HIM staff. Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Manage HIM vendor relationships, ensuring contractual performance, workflow optimization and system efficiency. In addition, we are seeking a candidate with previous experience in Hospital inpatient coding (ICD10 CM and PCS), along with the proven ability to lead large teams through complex changes in a matrixed environment. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or related Healthcare degree from an accredited institution. Education is verified. AHIMA certification (RHIA or RHIT) Demonstrated experience in progressive leadership roles in a large healthcare organization. Demonstrated ability to connect with leaders across many levels of the organization. Demonstrated success leading a team of HIM professionals. Demonstrated proficiency with EMR/HIM Data Management systems and technologies. Demonstrated proficiency utilizing Microsoft office tools. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates engaging presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to creatively problem solve and effectively influence change and manage the change process. Preferred Highly prefer Coding credential from AHIMA or AAPC Master’s degree in Health Information Management or related healthcare field from an accredited institution. Education is verified. Five (5) years experience at a manager level or above in an HIM function in a large healthcare system. ICD10 CM, ICD10 PCS and DRG Coding Technology (computer assisted coding, encoder, AI)  Change Management #LI-EXECRC Please note that a video interview with Microsoft Teams will be required along with the possibility of onsite interviews and/or meetings. Physical Requirements Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs. Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors who require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc. May have the same physical requirements as those of clinical or patient care jobs, when the leader takes clinical shifts. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
