Legal Writer & Document Drafter

This role is for someone who: • Is a brilliant writer and knows it • Loves documents, records, transcripts, timelines, and footnotes • Enjoys investigating messy facts and turning them into clear, persuasive narratives • Gets deep satisfaction from clean formatting, tight arguments, and citations that actually line up • Does not want to be a lawyer, argue in court, manage clients, or chase status • Wants to spend the bulk of their day writing, editing, organizing, and refining legal work If you secretly love being the person attorneys rely on when the writing really matters, keep reading. If you want to “eventually go to law school,” this is not the role for you. Our Firm handles serious, high-impact matters where the written word matters deeply: motions to dismiss, motions to vacate, post-conviction relief, restraining order litigation, and complex criminal defense. Our work changes lives, and when this role is done well, it elevates every case in the firm. Compensation: $30 - $40 hourly Responsibilities: Our pleadings have to be precise, persuasive, and grounded in the record. You will: • Draft and revise pleadings, declarations, motions, and supporting documents under the attorney's direction • Analyze transcripts, discovery, court records, and exhibits to extract facts and build timelines • Transform raw notes, outlines, and attorney direction into polished, court-ready drafts • Proofread and tighten arguments for clarity, logic, tone, and formatting • Ensure filings comply with court rules, citation standards, and internal formatting requirements • Organize and curate record sets so attorneys can argue from clean, reliable materials You will not be responsible for client strategy, legal advice, or courtroom appearances. Qualifications: We care far more about how you think than what your last job title was. You might come from: • A nonprofit or advocacy background • Academia, research, or investigative work • Litigation support, paralegal, or legal researcher roles • Journalism, policy, or document-heavy analysis roles Formal legal experience is helpful but not the only qualifier. Exceptional writing, analytical rigor, and thorough research skills are non-negotiable.
