Senior Technical Project Manager (Mobile App – Subscription Platform) - Contract to Hire
About the Project
We are building a native iOS and Android mobile application for a large, existing subscription-based digital platform.
The app will integrate with a highly customised backend system, support free trials, recurring subscriptions, entitlement-based access, in-app purchases, and secure content viewing.
This is a production-grade system, not a prototype or MVP.
We are working with an external mobile development agency and are seeking a senior, hands-on Technical Project Manager to own delivery from initial scope through public launch.
Role Overview
You will act as the single point of ownership for the mobile app delivery.
Your responsibility is to ensure the app is:
delivered on time and on budget
technically sound and scalable
compliant with Apple and Google app store policies
fully aligned with a subscription business model
thoroughly tested before launch
You will manage all communication with the mobile agency, coordinate backend/API requirements, own QA and UAT, and drive the project through to successful public release.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project & Delivery Ownership
Own mobile app delivery from discovery to launch
Translate business requirements into clear technical scope
Finalise and lock requirements with acceptance criteria
Manage timelines, milestones, dependencies, and risks
Run weekly delivery calls and produce status reporting
2. Vendor & Stakeholder Management
Act as the primary point of contact with the mobile development agency
Challenge unclear assumptions and scope gaps
Prevent scope creep and manage change requests
Coordinate between the agency and internal backend teams
Resolve technical disagreements and blockers
3. Technical Oversight
Oversee API contracts between app and backend systems
Ensure correct handling of:
free trials and subscription states
in-app purchases and receipt validation
entitlement-based access controls
secure content viewing
Ensure the solution is scalable and future-proof
Review architecture decisions and data flows
4. QA, Testing & Release Readiness
Own QA strategy and test planning
Create test plans covering:
trial start and expiry
subscription renewal and failure scenarios
reinstall and device change scenarios
online/offline transitions
entitlement and access edge cases
Run UAT on real devices (iOS and Android)
Coordinate bug triage and release readiness
Manage App Store and Play Store submission process
5. Compliance & App Store Governance
Ensure compliance with:
Apple App Store subscription rules
Google Play billing policies
pricing and trial disclosures
Oversee restore-purchase flows
Manage store review feedback and re-submissions
6. Analytics & Post-Launch
Define success metrics (conversion, retention, engagement)
Ensure analytics, crash reporting, and monitoring are implemented
Manage post-launch fixes and stabilisation
Provide recommendations for future roadmap phases
Required Experience
Must-Have
5+ years delivering complex digital products or platforms
Proven experience shipping native mobile apps (iOS and Android)
Strong experience with subscription-based products
Deep familiarity with App Store and Play Store billing models
Experience integrating apps with backend systems via APIs
Strong ownership of QA and UAT
Experience managing external development agencies
Excellent stakeholder communication skills
Nice-to-Have
Experience with highly customised or legacy backends
Experience with secure or entitlement-based content delivery
Familiarity with cross-platform frameworks (e.g. Flutter)
Experience with SaaS or large-scale consumer subscription platforms
Working Arrangement
Contract or fractional engagement (20–40 hours per week)
Expected duration: 3–6 months
Fully remote
Some overlap with UK / Europe working hours preferred
Compensation
Competitive, based on experience and availability
