Freelance Book Editor - Light Copyediting & Proofreading (Completed Manuscript)

Overview We are seeking an experienced and meticulous Freelance Book Editor for a completed manuscript of approximately 180000 words. This project requires a light editing approach, primarily focusing on copyediting and final proofreading. The manuscript is structurally complete and does not require developmental or heavy content revisions. The ideal candidate has a strong command of grammar, syntax, and style, and a track record of delivering clean, polished manuscripts on time. The editor will focus on ensuring the manuscript is polished and publication-ready by addressing the following: • Grammar & Syntax: Correcting errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. • Consistency: Ensuring consistency in style (e.g., following the Chicago Manual of Style or a similar guide), hyphenation, numbering, and character/plot details. • Flow & Clarity: Identifying and correcting awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, or minor areas where meaning is unclear, without altering the author’s voice. • Proofreading: Performing a final, thorough check to catch any lingering typos or formatting errors. • Tracking Changes: Delivering a clean final manuscript and a marked-up version (typically using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature). Qualifications • Proven experience as a professional book editor, specifically in copyediting and proofreading. • Expert-level knowledge of a major style guide (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style is preferred). • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining the author’s original voice and intent. • Ability to meet deadlines and communicate clearly and promptly. • Experience in the [Re-insert Genre] genre is a plus.
