Data Engineer

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-11-24
We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our growing R&D Engineering team. If you are excited by the idea of turning data into scientific models and scalable, production-ready systems that support healthcare innovation—this is the role for you.

As part of a collaborative and fast-paced team, you’ll play a key role in supporting our Scientists and Engineers to scale impact across a diverse set of health and behavior datasets and their metadata. You'll help take prototypes and turn them into robust data infrastructure that supports scalable pipelines, analytics, and machine learning operations. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their Data Engineering career who is eager to grow, learn, and make a difference.

Surgo Health is a human-centric AI company that delivers the deepest understanding of human behavior to power better health for all.

A life-saving drug or treatment is of no use if people don’t take it. Surgo Health believes that a complete understanding of what drives people’s behavior – and how their context impacts them – is critical to ensure every person lives a healthy life. Our proprietary data and AI-technology platform produce fit-for-purpose intelligence, analytics, and recommendations that enable our partners to deliver more equitable, efficient, and cost-effective programs that improve health outcomes across the globe.

Our world-class team of healthcare experts and scientists use behavioral science, data science, and artificial intelligence to build innovative, scalable solutions that power patient-centric care and improve outcomes. We are a growing team with ambitious plans, and we're searching for top-class talent who want to roll up their sleeves and dive into a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

As a DC-based start-up with a global footprint, this is a fantastic opportunity for someone who thrives in start-up culture and wants to help shape the future of healthcare delivery in low- and middle-income countries (this will be role specific). We believe our solutions can make healthcare more effective, personalized, equitable, and drive impact at scale.

What you’ll achieve:
  • Productionize Databricks notebooks created by our Scientists
  • Create, manage, and enhance data pipelines that support ML and analytics workflows
  • Support and collaborate closely with our Head of Engineering
  • Improve and maintain our cloud-based data infrastructure on Azure and AWS
  • Help support and enforce best practices for data engineering, curation, and notebook development
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure data products align with our platform principles and scientific goals
  • Build scalable and efficient pipelines that connect raw data and metadata to insights and products
  • Help evolve our use of the Databricks platform, and our broader Azure/AWS cloud environments
  • Translate Python/SQL/R  code from exploration to production-grade
  • Be a hands-on partner to Scientists, supporting their work and helping scale their models
  • Contribute to shaping our engineering culture and infrastructure as we grow

About you:
  • You have a solid foundation in data engineering and/or MLOps and are excited to keep learning
  • You have experience with Databricks
  • You have experience in Python, R and SQL transformations and data pipeline creation
  • You're familiar with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
  • You have at least 3 years of relevant work experience
  • You hold a University degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • You communicate well and enjoy being part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team
  • You thrive in fast-moving environments where you can take ownership and iterate quickly
  • You are fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • You’re comfortable working remotely, with at least 50% timezone overlap with US/GMT

Location: This is a Türkiye-based role. Surgo is headquartered in Washington, DC, but our team is spread across the US, UK, and India
