The opportunity As a Staff Optical Engineer within the Waveguide Analysis & Root-cause Physics (WARP) team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the deep understanding of waveguide design, fabrication, and metrology, and ultimately contribute to building and delivering the best AR displays on the market. The WARP team bridges front-end design with analysis of manufactured waveguides to understand and mitigate data discrepancies, and ultimately increase production yield. Lessons learned by the WARP Team are essential to improving the waveguide optimization process and moving production into higher volumes for the wider adoption of comfortable, affordable, high-performing AR displays. As a member of the WARP team you will be directly contributing to the advancement of AR displays that have the potential of being worn by millions of users. What you'll do • Work on a cross-functional team bridging design, fabrication, and metrology aimed at understanding and mitigating discrepancies between simulated and real-world waveguide behavior • Develop pipelines for analyzing large simulation and experimental datasets describing waveguide structure, properties, and key performance indicators • Develop robust optimization algorithms that automate the inclusion of manufacturing tolerances into the waveguide design process • Contribute to delivering the highest performing and lowest cost waveguides in the AR industry The experience you bring • 8+ years of professional experience in scientific research, engineering design, and/or data analysis • Masters Degree in optics, photonics, physics, or electrical engineering • Deep understanding of fundamental physics and engineering processes • Experience with electromagnetic modeling techniques, including but not limited to ray tracing, RCWA, FDTD, and FEM • Experience with data analysis techniques, including but not limited to sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo analysis, and machine learning pipelines • Excellent programming skills in a collaborative environment, particularly with Python and GitLab • Excellent written and verbal communication skills It's exciting if you also have • Ph.D. in optics, photonics, physics, or electrical engineering • Experience with the design, fabrication, and/or characterization of diffractive gratings, including but not limited to surface relief gratings, polarization volume gratings, and volume holographic gratings • Experience with the design, fabrication, and/or characterization of waveguides for AR displays, including but not limited to diffractive waveguides and reflective waveguides • Experience with machine learning techniques that leverage large data sets for the improvement of engineering design and fabrication processes • Experience with global optimization techniques over large parameter spaces • Familiarity with process engineering and nanoscale manufacturing • Experience with material and optical characterization techniques, including but not limited to ellipsometry, scatterometry, AFM, SEM • Experience developing Python applications for distribution • Experience with C++ programming Additional Information All your information will be kept confidential according to Equal Employment Opportunities guidelines.
