Join the Future of Design Engineering at Netflix

Be part of a career-defining role as a Senior Design Engineer with Netflix's XD Design Engineering team! We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our remote team, working on the foundational system that powers the Netflix Design System across multiple design and engineering platforms. As a Senior Design Engineer, you will have the opportunity to drive innovation, lead projects, and collaborate with cross-functional partners to shape the future of design engineering.

About Netflix's XD Design Engineering Team

XD Design Engineering is a small but mighty team with a big mandate: to develop, maintain, and innovate the Design Platform central to Netflix's product development lifecycle. Our goal is to improve product development velocity without compromising on fidelity and to increase efficiency of the design/engineering handoff. Our portfolio includes API services, web apps, and Figma plugins, serving a diverse range of cross-functional partners, from product designers and project managers to software engineers.

The Role

As a Senior Design Engineer with our team, you will work on the foundational system that powers the Netflix Design System across multiple design and engineering platforms. You will collaborate closely with both designers and engineers, working with platform and product teams to drive innovation. You will lead and champion projects and effectively communicate their impact to partner teams. You will also gather input from stakeholders, identifying opportunities to help set a long-term technical strategy that continuously evolves the design platform to ensure it remains best-in-class.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Owning, maintaining, and expanding critical API infrastructure (Design Platform API) serving hundreds of requests per second (Federated GraphQL Service, Node, Apollo)
  • Designing, maintaining, and evolving GraphQL Schemas
  • Supporting back-end requirements of Design Tooling products
  • Completing medium to large features independently without guidance
  • Identifying and implementing reliability and performance improvements in our backend portfolio
  • Upholding our high engineering standards and bringing consistency to the codebases, infrastructure, and processes you will encounter
  • Conducting design and code reviews

Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional experience designing, building, and shipping software
  • Proven ability to lead projects and communicate with cross-functional partners
  • Strong project management skills
  • Able to design, architect, debug, test, and create well-documented code
  • Able to identify and componentize common abstractions with an eye for performance and stability of large-scale systems
  • Proficient in JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js
  • You strive to elevate the knowledge and skills of yourself and others in a way that fosters an inclusive, collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ownership mentality in all the things you build and are comfortable with identifying opportunities and driving forward-looking technical roadmaps
  • Thoughtful, practical approach to problem-solving that considers tradeoffs and avoids over-engineering
  • Motivated by the scope and impact to influence decisions that impact millions of users and billions of requests
  • Well-versed in the technologies of the modern frontend landscape. You can distill hype from practical application
  • Current/former professional experience working with Design Systems
  • Bonus if you've contributed to open-source projects
