Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and compassionate Food Shelf Assistant to join our team. As a Food Shelf Assistant, you will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service, supporting food shelf participants, volunteers, and donors, and ensuring the smooth operation of our food shelf program. This is a part-time position, working 24 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends, and occasional additional hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service to food shelf participants, volunteers, donors, school staff, service providers, and community members, responding to their needs and concerns in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
  • Identify and prioritize the needs of food shelf participants, providing support and resources to ensure they have access to nutritious food and other essential services.
  • Schedules appointments in the food shelf database, maintaining accurate client records, and ensuring seamless communication with participants and volunteers.
  • Assist food shelf participants as needed, answering questions, providing community resources, and supporting them in accessing food and other essential services.
  • Support and fill in for volunteers when needed, ensuring that our shelves are well-stocked and organized with a wide variety of foods and non-food items.
  • Receive incoming mail, deliveries, and donations, processing and recording them accurately.
  • Replenish and maintain literature and supplies, keeping all common areas organized and clean.
  • Assist in creating and designing flyers, posters, social media materials, and other visual graphics using Canva design tool.
  • Support special projects, fundraising efforts, and seasonal events, contributing to the overall success of our food shelf program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A college degree in a related field, such as social work, human services, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to work respectfully and responsibly with diverse populations, including those with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented environment, including working with or alongside other volunteers.
  • Proficiency with PC, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office, with the ability to quickly learn new software applications.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, with occasional bending and standing.

  • Previous experience working or volunteering in a food shelf setting, with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and families in need.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse and/or under-represented populations, with a commitment to social justice and community empowerment.
