Key Responsibilities
As an Elementary Special Education Self-Contained Teaching Assistant, you will be responsible for:
- Implementing instructional plans as determined by licensed teachers and therapists to support students' learning and achievement of IEP objectives
- Applying lesson modifications as directed and supplementing or changing lesson modifications as needed to ensure that learning objectives are met
- Prompting, cueing, and redirecting students to keep them on task and engaged
- Administering curriculum-based tests/quizzes and recording student assignments and progress
- Providing physical care and support as needed, including diapering, toileting, feeding, and reinforcing adaptive PE/motor activities
- Observing, documenting, and reinforcing appropriate student behaviors and communicating with teachers and facilitators
- Participating in weekly team meetings to review student progress, plan upcoming lessons, and engage in trainings
- Assisting with non-instructional activities and maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in common areas
- Retrieving students from buses or cars at the start of classes and escorting them to appropriate buses or cars at the end of classes when required
- Recording and updating student progress toward achievement of individual educational plans
Requirements and Qualifications
To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you will need:
Essential Qualifications:
- A valid Educator License with Stipulations (PARA), Substitute License, or Professional Educator License
- Experience working with special education students (preferred)
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
- Basic arithmetic skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Proficiency in using personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel)
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and be sensitive to individual differences
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree or higher
- 60 semester hours of coursework
- High School Diploma or GED and a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro
- High School Diploma or GED and the following scores on the ACT Workkeys: Applied Mathematics/Applied Math (with a score of 4) and Reading for Information/Workplace Documents (with a score of 4)
Physical Abilities and Work Environment
As an Elementary Special Education Self-Contained Teaching Assistant, you will be required to:
- Lift students and perform other manipulations to support daily living skills
- Regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb, climb stairs or balance, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
- Push, pull, lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
You will work in a standard school building environment and may be required to work outdoors during outdoor student activities. Travel between schools may be necessary.
